The Daily Sludge Report It was a beautiful day today but a little cool. I didn't notice any odors in Tangerine when I checked but I did notice one as I drove North on 441 past the Stoneybrook Hills water recycling plant. A friend who drives by 3 days a week didn't notice anything but I think I passed it an hour or so after she did. Here's her report.  No smells anywhere today. Had my sniffer on high passing by Jones Avenue, nothing near mushroomland, nothing by 46, nothing at Renninger's. Very gusty today. It seemed to be coming out of the north/northwest at least at 4pm when I left. The air was breathable today. Here's the report that I got out of Zellwood. I drove through Zellwood on 441 today as well and smelled a kind of car exhaust odor that continued into Apopka. Here's the report on that.    My son just came to my house and said he literally wanted to throw up walking from his car to the house! He said, “It never smells like this in A

I still have a scratchy throat but I'm beginning to back to normal. I was not pleased to learn that my irritated respiratory system could be more susceptible to viruses (thinking of COVID-19) that it would have been if I hadn't been exposed to the irritants we experienced on Tuesday. I was able to go outside today and play with my dog in the yard after I was done with all of the phone calls and e-mails that occur behind the scenes when running a FB page, a FB group, and a blog while answering questions while setting up a petition. My poor dog was just about to give up on me when I was finally able to break away and take him out. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is meeting with Anuvia on Monday and Shelley's Septic Tanks on Wednesday regarding violations. It was nice this afternoon while we were out in the yard. I was hoping for a good couple of days of fresh air and went to a meeting with my husband and shared our (the group's) progress and th

Our Change.Org Petition for Fresh, Clean, Air in Northwest County

Image
Greetings, I created a petition to garner support for our efforts to have fresh, clean air in our neighborhoods once again. The text of the petition is posted below. I hope that you'll find it in your heart to sign and share to help us get the word out. If the hotlink doesn't work for you here is the URL http://chng.it/5SdVhKph24 Our local community, Tangerine, Zellwood, and the surrounding neighborhoods have been plagued with some horrible smells in the last few years.  There are a number of stinky businesses that have caused us to band together. We report the smell incidents in our Facebook group and send e-mails to our state and local officials when they occur.  The commercial above was filmed in Tangerine and should give you an idea of how natural this area is.    Despite our efforts, the noxious odors are getting worse. We are being held hostage by "That Smell." Some days it's so bad that we can't go out in our yards and, on the worst days

Why We Could Smell Anuvia Plant Nutrients' Fumes Despite Production Being Shutdown

Image
Anuvia Plant Nutrients shut down production yesterday due to complaints of fumes from their process. Apparently they had a malfunction of some sort. There were still fumes in the air this morning causing people to think that the odor had to be Shelley's Septic Tanks. Even if some of the odors were from Shelley's, some were from Anuvia due to a temperature inversion last night. Temperature inversions can affect us by holding smoke, pesticides, and particulate matter close to the ground instead of naturally dissipating into the atmosphere. We need to be careful when we identify odor sources to avoid placing blame in the wrong place. How to Identify if an Inversion Exists: Measure air temperature at 6–12 inches above the soil and at 8–10 feet above the soil. An inversion exists if measured air temperature at 8–10 feet above the soil is higher than the measured air temperature at 6–12 inches above the soil. Be sure the instrument is shaded and not influenced by solar h

Action Plan for Clean Air in Northwest Orange County (Draft)

Action Plan for Clean Air in Northwest Orange County Draft in Progress Who is at Risk From Poor Air Quality : Poor air quality can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, cause shortness of breath, aggravate asthma and other respiratory conditions, and affect the heart and cardiovascular system so everyone is at risk. Who is Most at Risk From Poor Air Quality :  Pound for pound, children breathe more than adults and are more sensitive to pollution. Their air passages are narrower, so it takes less inflammation or irritation to obstruct their airways. They also are more likely to have asthma or other respiratory illnesses, which are aggravated by air pollution. Seniors and Poor Air Quality :  Older adults may have heart or lung disease that puts them at greater risk. Diabetics are at increased risk in part because they also have a higher risk of underlying cardiovascular disease. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a representation of air pollution concentration levels. It assi

Resident Complaint Re: Bad Aromas in Tangerine- Tangerine Stinks

Dear Ms. Repass and Ms. Gardner,  I am REDACTED and I’ve lived in Orange County’s rural settlement, Tangerine for 21 years, raised in Orange County for 68 years.  There have often been ripe aromas from time to time; mostly experiencing the horse bedding/soil used by the Mushroom plant. With a nearby animal cemetery, we apparently have smelled it.  Only in the last maybe two years have we endured pungent, obnoxious human waste smells. These odors affect our quality of life, interfere with enjoying breezes through open windows or sitting on a front porch or back screened porch. Walking the dog is unpleasant when human waste smells waft our way.   Tangerine is a bird sanctuary. We chose to live in a rural neighborhood because of fresh air and wide-open spaces, starry nights and sun soaked days. The smells of late are diminishing that life quality and I fear if not solved, will diminish our property values.  Our government leaders owe taxpayers a safe, clean, quality environment

Today's odeur du jour is brought to you by Anuvia , and has been reported in these areas. It can be found in other areas as we depend on our private Facebook page for locations. If no one is in a location, or if it's not reposted, we won't be able to post it here.  Zellwood Lake Ola, Tangerine North Lake Ola, Tangerine  Tues. Feb 25th @7:21am It STINKS on the north side of Lake Ola. My Husband just opened the back door to walk out. When he walked back in, the inside of the house smells. BAD. I asked if he has passed gas because I knew I had not. His reply - " It's outside." Tangerine Stoneybrook Hills The Laurels of Mount Dora Lake Gertrude, Mount Dora Area   It smelled absolutely horrible this morning in Mount Dora near the Lake Gertrude area. I mean to the gagging point. It smelled like a dead body rotting in a pile of hot stinky garbage. It was not the normal mushroom smell or the sewer smell. REDACTED Tue 2/25/2020 11:33 AM You ;  EPDComplaints@ocfl.net;  Maria Repass;  mayor@ocfl.net;  Elizabeth.Roby@ocfl.net +14 others    Good Morning,  The odor this morning was particularly bad. My throat is burning and this has to stop.  I'm sharing my blog post this morning to share how my life is going since I retired from teaching. I used to zoom out of Tangerine at 4:50 am to be at work at 5:30 to be ready for students at 7:20 am. I'd return home at 3:30 pm and life was good. I missed out on most of the smells from our local businesses and wasn't aware of the true extent of the stench. Somehow I'd managed to live here for 26 years without knowing that I'd moved into an industrial park.  Yes, we had the mushroom farm. Then it was Shelley's Septic Tanks, and now Anuvia with a touch of Mid-Florida Materials dump spiced up with a whiff of Industrial Container Services.  Now I get up and read about the smell on the p

Anuvia Asks for Our Help

Image
I woke up to this (see above) and more this morning. My dog loves to be outside on the porch but he refused to go outside to do his business until he absolutely had to. Think about it. It stinks to us and to a dog who smells 40 times better than we do, it must be absolutely revolting. There was a post in the Smelly Group saying that Anuvia was running. It certainly smelled as if they were. Before I posted, I decided to confirm this with Anuvia. Their contact information is on the website. I'd called Anuvia last week asking if they were running and left my name and phone number with the receptionist. I never got a return call. I decided to try again.  Today I was given the cell phone of the #2 guy (he asked me not to give it out, so don't ask) and he wasn't aware that we could smell anything. He was receptive to speaking with me and told me that Anuvia is actively working to fix the smell. (As I write this, a fresh whiff of stink is coming my way) He said that they

E-mail Sent Re Objectionable Odors 2_24_2020

Greetings, I'm writing to formally request your help in dealing with an odor issue that has been plaguing my community. The odors we are experiencing are from various community businesses in Northwest Orange County. Some of our local businesses disregard the odor ordinances with impunity and have been cited in the past. Still, the problems continue to exist.  I am REDACTED and live in Tangerine Rural Settlement. There is currently an objectionable odor that I associate with Shelley's Septic Tanks and Anuvia's operation in Zellwood wafting our way. The wind was blowing from the Southeast. This odor is affecting me by irritating my throat and keeping me indoors. The residents here are working to make our air pleasant and safe for our families. Please record this report of the odor and forward it to the appropriate departments. To date, the following actions have been taken: E-mails have been sent to the officials above repeatedly Florida DEP has issued warnings to

Clarification on PRR Result in No Citations for Shelley's Septic Tanks 2_23_2020

The long story short is that I e-mailed Robert Spivey of Code Enforcement regarding the lack of documents regarding Shelley's Septic Tanks and the fact that we know they were cited. First, I'll attach my e-mail and second, I'll post his reply.  Mark your calendars.

I sent an e-mail to everyone on our list yesterday thanking them for the help they've given us. Now it's my turn to thank you for your support. Starting this page wasn't an easy thing to do because I didn't know how much we could accomplish. We still have a long way to go on this, but I want to let you know just how much I appreciate your support on our "smelly" issue. Of the people on the list, @ashley Gardner of the FDEP has been the most consistently helpful. Here is her response: Respectfully, K.
