That Smell in Tangerine, Florida and Nearby Neighborhoods

My throat is burning and this has to stop.  I'm sharing my blog post this morning to share how my life is going since I retired from teaching. I used to zoom out of Tangerine at 4:50 am to be at work at 5:30 to be ready for students at 7:20 am. I'd return home at 3:30 pm and life was good. I missed out on most of the smells from our local businesses and wasn't aware of the true extent of the stench. Somehow I'd managed to live here for 26 years without knowing that I'd moved into an industrial park.  Yes, we had the mushroom farm. Then it was Shelley's Septic Tanks, and now Anuvia with a touch of Mid-Florida Materials dump spiced up with a whiff of Industrial Container Services.  Now I get up and read...

Good afternoon, I live next door to Shelley’s Septic Services and we use well water for our household needs including preparing food and beverages. I have become aware that the Florida State Department of Environmental Protection has cited this business for poor runoff control of their products during storms and other problems.   I am aware that Shelley’s Septic Services has a poor record of following the requirements for handling waste in the proper ways and employees were charged with felonies for improper dumping of sewage waste in the past.    Because the nature of this business is working with raw sewage and biosolids, this is a concern for me.   Clearly, this company’s record shows that they have little concern for the health and well being of people who may be exposed to their sewage and its products. I’m concerned about two problems for the lakefront homeowners, the odors and their source’s effects on the lake and the groundwater.   I believe that the odor problem is well known to you. The unpredictable onset of the various stenches seems to occur with no rhyme or reason.
