Recording Odors and More: Advice for Sullivan Ranch and Stoneybrook Hills Residents

I haven't written about the Mount Dora City Council meeting on December 15th yet for several reasons. You can listen to a recording of the meeting here.  Although I was there, I spent all of the meeting in the hallway as the room was too crowded during a pandemic, so I didn't hear much of what was going on.  Although fixing the smell is important to me, my health and my significant other's health is more important.  It was clear to me that there was no regard for Covid-19 when the decision was made to hold the meeting in the City Council Meeting Room instead of the much larger Community Room. I don't know the room measurements but I believe that it was unsafe to be in. (I have a contract tracing certificate from Johns Hopkins.) You can calculate the number of safe minutes using the square footage, ceiling height, and the number of people present here.   I don't know how big the room is but I assumed it was 1,000 square feet with 12-foot ceilings. I don't know ho...

Another Letter to Mount Dora Regarding the Dump and the City Council Meeting

Image
Dear Mr. Sandersfeld, It is my understanding that Mid-Florida Materials (dump) has requested that the City of Mount Dora annex their property.  It is also my understanding that this issue is to be voted on at the city council meeting to be held on Thursday, September 24, 2020. I was wondering if you could advise me if the city will aggressively deal with the problem of the odors emanating from the dump as a condition of the annexation.   I live on Lake Ola Drive and we have had problems lately with odors from the dump.  We reported this to Lake County and when their person came out to investigate he basically said he did not believe us, that the odors could not travel this far and that he was not going to write a report.  This was told to my neighbor who had tree trimmers working at her house at the time who also verified that they could smell the objectionable odors. Our area has been vigorously fighting severe odor issues with Shelley's Septic and Anuvi...

Mount Dora Council Meeting to Consider Annexing the Dump on 46 Into the City

Image
The dump on 46 that has been the source of recent smells in our area is about to be annexed by Mount Dora! The annexation is scheduled for the Mount Dora City Council meeting on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. We need all able bodies to show up at the city council meeting to show opposition to the annexation of the dump! Please go to the city council meeting if you are available! Thank you in advance! Below is a comment typical of those we get from nearly residents who have lived with the smell of this dump for years. It's much worse in the Sullivan Ranch area than it is in Tangerine. There are many others but it's 5:30 am and I went to bed after midnight so I'm stopping here.  - First thank you for accepting me in this group, second I wake up to that aweful smell as well I live in Sullivan ranch, I’ve been here for about 8 yrs and it has gotten worse over the yrs. I’m hoping it gets resolved what can I do to help it along? Please come to the meeting. We cannot ...

Update from Labor Day Dumpy Smell

Image
Daniel from Commissioner Moore's office responded almost immediately to the e-mail I sent yesterday.  So we responded immediately as well.  We also got more information about the location. The dump is located in Lake County but smell knows no boundaries so we can smell it in Tangerine on occasion.  I'd like to extend special thanks to the Facebook group members who helped me get the address and information for Commissioner Moore's office.

It's Labor Day and There's a Stink in the Air

Image
After writing blog posts two days in a row, the last thing I want to do is to write another one. But here I am. It's 5 am and I was just jolted awake by a foul odor coming in from the North. (Lake County) I am going to use Lake County's Code Enforcement Violation Reporting Link that I just found. Give it a try if you smell it because this odor is coming from Lake County. I suspect that it's a local construction dump that has been cited for odor violations in the past but I have no evidence to back that up. The wind is coming in from the North, Shelley's Septic Tank, Anuvia, and the Mushroom Farm are eliminated. -Wind and gusts from the N at 5 mph -Humidity 91 percent, temperature 77 degrees -Pressure 29.90 and falling -Precipitation 0.06 inches (estimate) This is the e-mail that I sent out today. Yes, it's Labor Day and I'm writing e-mails on a holiday once again. E-mail recipients katherine.marsh@ocfl.net maria.repass@ocfl.net ...

Why Do We Get the Funk on Holiday Weekends?

Image
It's the Sunday before Labor Day. Most people have the day off tomorrow, so what could go wrong? True to form, the greater Tangerine area had odor complaints just in time for the holiday.  How the Day Started Another holiday weekend ruined by the local stink. The wind is coming from the NE so I'm guessing it's from a local dump in Lake County.  Weather Information: 8:26 am-a fetid garbage odor is blanketing the neighborhood 78 degrees Precipitation 0.00 Wind and gusts from the NE at 3 mph Humidity 97% Pressure rising 30.04 An e-mail was sent to Maria Repass re the odor. Comments - 10:21pm: Stoneybrook Hills- Smells like sewer, reported to both sites . Winds are calm / coming from N/NW - Got some serious funk when I got home at 10:20 PM in Stoneybrook again. It went away now but it was nasty. So Why Do We Get the Funk on Holiday Weekends? .....

By 6:30, it was absolutely horrible. It's picking up at the Tangerine Park and probably headed your way now.  There is just nothing quite like walking out your door in the morning and being greeted with an overpowering smell of human waste. UGH!! I feel lie I'm living in a 3rd world country! 7:00 AM  Thursday, March 5 Lake Ola Drive with the winds coming from the Southeast and the smell is awful yet again today. I'll be sending emails to the list of officials later this morning. 7:30 am. Taking the dog out (441 and Earlwood) and it stinks like a sewer. Barely any wind but, my phone says it’s coming from the South. I’ll be writing some emails today. Q: Has anyone contacted Dr. ...

Lake County Wastewater Treatment Plant

Image
Due to smell complaints this morning, I called the Mount Dora wastewater plant administrator and we talked about the plant by Stoneybrook Hills. (His number is 352-735-7151.) Richard was quite open and informative. There are two times that an odor can be detected, when the dirty water enters the plant and is aerated and when the tank with the sludge is emptied. The tank is emptied when its full and the process takes about 12 hours. He also mentioned that cold weather can hold the smell to the ground especially when there is low lying fog. (Temperature inversion) He is aware of the smells that are coming from Jones Avenue knew that they have permeated the city of Mount Dora at times. He welcomes the DEP to visit his plant at any time. I explained that I was doing my due diligence and didn't think it was his plant today. There is a possibility of re-routed the water as it enters the plant to remove that odor, but it could cost around $250,000 to make that change. He can al...
