The Daily Sludge Report Zero Days Without A Smell Report Check back for updates as reports come in- Please note that reports are from a voluntary Facebook group and each  report also represents an unknown number of individuals who are also aware  of the smells that are permeating our neighborhoods. Thanks to  Christine Moore's  office, we are now able to document smell  occurrences on a digital file.   Please Help Me Get Rid of This Smell so I Can Do Other Stuff Points of reports are documented on the map. The descriptions are a work in progress. Around 6:15 am, the poo smell was overpowering while driving through the intersection at 441 and 46.  I talked to Lake County this morning and they had no idea. We have to get them on board when the smell is in Lake County.  For Lake County the e-mail contact is Stephanie.Dougherty@SLHealth.gov [UPDATE: I GOT THIS ADDRESS FROM LAKE COUNTY THIS MORNING BUT IT CAME BACK T...

Action Plan for Clean Air in Northwest Orange County Draft in Progress Who is at Risk From Poor Air Quality : Poor air quality can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, cause shortness of breath, aggravate asthma and other respiratory conditions, and affect the heart and cardiovascular system so everyone is at risk. Who is Most at Risk From Poor Air Quality :  Pound for pound, children breathe more than adults and are more sensitive to pollution. Their air passages are narrower, so it takes less inflammation or irritation to obstruct their airways. They also are more likely to have asthma or other respiratory illnesses, which are aggravated by air pollution. Seniors and Poor Air Quality :  Older adults may have heart or lung disease that puts them at greater risk. Diabetics are at increased risk in part because they also have a higher risk of underlying cardiovascular disease. REDACTED Tue 2/25/2020 11:33 AM You ;  EPDComplaints@ocfl.net;  Maria Repass;  mayor@ocfl.net;  Elizabeth.Roby@ocfl.net +14 others    Good Morning,  The odor this morning was particularly bad. My throat is burning and this has to stop.  I'm sharing my blog post this morning to share how my life is going since I retired from teaching. I used to zoom out of Tangerine at 4:50 am to be at work at 5:30 to be ready for students at 7:20 am. I'd return home at 3:30 pm and life was good. I missed out on most of the smells from our local businesses and wasn't aware of the true extent of the stench. Somehow I'd managed to live here for 26 years without knowing that I'd moved into an industrial park.  Yes, we had the mushroom farm. Then it was Shelley's Septic Tanks, and now Anuvia with a touch of Mid-Florida Materials dump spiced up with a whiff of Industrial Container Services.  Now I get up and read...

E-mail Sent Re Objectionable Odors 2_24_2020

Greetings, I'm writing to formally request your help in dealing with an odor issue that has been plaguing my community. The odors we are experiencing are from various community businesses in Northwest Orange County. Some of our local businesses disregard the odor ordinances with impunity and have been cited in the past. Still, the problems continue to exist.  I am REDACTED and live in Tangerine Rural Settlement. There is currently an objectionable odor that I associate with Shelley's Septic Tanks and Anuvia's operation in Zellwood wafting our way. The wind was blowing from the Southeast. This odor is affecting me by irritating my throat and keeping me indoors. The residents here are working to make our air pleasant and safe for our families. Please record this report of the odor and forward it to the appropriate departments. To date, the following actions have been taken: E-mails have been sent to the officials above repeatedly Florida DEP has issued warnings to...

Shelley Septic Tanks-Public Records Request 53853

Image
Update: This came in from Nick Cooper this afternoon:  Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. As we looked into your concern with Shelly’s Septic, it was determined that Shelly’s property is located outside of Lake Ola’s drainage basin (see map below). Shelly’s runoff flows south through a retention pond that is owned by Orange County and then continues through a constructed wetland that is owned by St. Johns River Water Management District. From there, water continues to flow south towards Lake Apopka. I'll write a separate post on this topic.  Below you'll find the e-mail I received today from Orange County's Code Enforcement Public Records Coordinator. They found no record of zoning violations. I am scratching my head on this response. As I look out on Lake Ola, I'm reminded of how the water is less clear than in previous years and how the lake seems to be nutrient full. I wonder how long it will be as clear as it is now. I am conv...
