FDEP is out Making Rounds
Dr. Phil Kane of FDEP was out doing his rounds this morning (May 11, 2020) while I was working in my driveway. We had a nice, socially distanced conversation. He looks at our reports and thinks that some of the smell is coming from the mushroom plant. They have compost piles of both wet virgin hay and horse manure. They also use chemicals that smell and they have a pond that they stir to aerate that causes odors to come out.
He personally visited and toured Monterey Mushrooms this morning to see their processes. He said they have a lot of composting material.
He assured me that the FDEP is like a steamroller and that his boss is fully aware of the odor complaints here. It takes a while to get started but they can flatten anything in its path.
He left to continue to go on his rounds. It's too bad that Mondays tend to be quiet in an odor-sense.
A Note From the Editor
We are now able to report odors to the FDEP online. We still need to send an e-mail or call Orange County to report to them. Orange County is working on having an online system to report and it was supposed to be up this week. The virus is slowing things down.

Zero Days Without an Odor Report
Odor Reports
Call and write e-mails when you smell the odors. Don't give up, that is what the offending businesses want us to do. The e-mail list is located at the bottom of the page and the link for online reporting is above.
Letters and Correspondence
May 9, 2020Dear Governor DeSantis,
I have written to you on two previous occasions about the horrendous smalls and unclean air we are suffering from in Tangerine and the surrounding areas. The cause of this is the Anuvia Plant Nutrients fertilizer plant and Shelley's Septic Services which are more than three miles away from my house.
I received an email from someone in the environmental department after my second email to you and the person advised me to stay inside when the smell was present. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE! This is the second night in a row when the odor has permeated INTO my house and my eyes and throat are burning! So what is the advice from the person who said to stay inside? I cannot even imagine what the people who live closer are going through. Is the state willing to pay the cost for me to have better windows installed in my house so the smells cannot permeate into the house?
PLEASE, PLEASE help us! The local government feels it is more important to install trees in medians and have us call DOT to report weeds at the side of the road than to get this problem resolved. We are all beyond frustrated!
This has been a trying and stressful time for all of us and we do not need the added stress of polluted air and harmful odors. I also need to be able to sleep in my house without having to breathe this which is caustic to my eyes and throat/
It is always much worse on the weekends because the violators know there are no inspectors working. We have a Facebook page That Smell in Tangerine and Surrounding Areas if you would like to see what we are going through. The smell has also been reported as far away as Mount Dora.
Please find it in your heart to help us. I know COVID 19 is still at the top of your agenda but if we were to get sick we would not even know it because of what we go through on an almost daily basis.
Respectfully,
REDACTED
Of Note
I called Bob Spivey of Orange County and left a message on his voicemail. He called me back and left me a voicemail as well. Here are his comments.
- He isn't involved in Orange County hiring a consultant to investigate odors and he suspects that Orange County EPD may be who Christine Moore's office was referring to.
- He is involved with special permits and [referring to Shelley's] said that they will be required to apply for a special exception for some of the waste water treatment they have been doing. They haven't applied for anything. Shelley's has been down to zoning to see about getting zoning for some buildings they constructed without a permit.
