Good afternoon,
I live about 3 miles from Shelley’s Septic and Anuvia in Tangerine on Lake Ola. I’m concerned about two problems for the lakefront homeowners, the odors and their source’s effects on the lake and the groundwater.
I believe that the odor problem is well known to you. The unpredictable onset of the various stenches seems to occur with no rhyme or reason. Sometimes they last for minutes and other times they last all day.
Those of us on the north side of the lake smell them the most when the wind in coming in from the south or southeast. Sometimes the odors are so strong and invasive that it’s impossible to determine where they are coming from, they just seem to envelop the entire area.
Many of the homeowners have complained about really bad chemical odors that seem to coincide with the opening of the Anuvia plant. Most of the locals in Tangerine are just finding out about this plant and we would have remained blissfully ignorant of its presence but for the smell. We can recall this particular chemical smell going back for 3-4 years.
We’ve also had odors that we believe are coming from Shelleys Septic as they smell exactly like raw sewage. Shelley’s Septic Services has a poor record of following the law when it comes to the way that the sewage they work with is handled and they have been in trouble with the FDEP in the past. Because the nature of this business is working with raw sewage and biosolids, this is a concern for us.
In regards to the health of the lake, we are concerned with the possibility of raw sewage runoff getting into the lake. We fish, swim, and boat in our lake and shudder at the idea of being exposed to toxic chemicals and possible parasites from raw sewage.
We cannot understand how businesses can be allowed to stink up and pollute a residential area. Additionally, we are concerned that the persistence of these odors will affect our ability to sell our homes when we want to.
Best regards,
