What You Need to Know About Shelley's Code Enforcement Hearing

We've had some pretty smell-free days lately. Anuvia was down for maintenance and Shelly's Septic Tanks has a hearing with the code enforcement board on July 8th, so they're laying low or so it would seem.

A Note From the Editor

Shelley's Septic Tanks has a meeting with a special magistrate for Code Enforcement on July 8th at 9 am. We need your personal stories on how the odor has affected you. An example would be: "My Sunday night barbecue was ruined because the odor was so bad that we had to go inside." These stories will be presented to the Special Magistrate who will oversee the hearing.
Letters/e-mails can be addressed to Tim Boldig, acting CE Manager, or to the Special Magistrate. Please ask that to have your email placed in the public record of the hearing.
You can e-mail your stories to tangerinestinks@gmail.com. You can attach your story as a document to your e-mail if you like. We will forward them to Code Enforcement for you.
There will be a way to participate in the hearing virtually or on the phone as the courtroom is closed due to the virus. More will be coming on that.

Odor Reports

Report the odors every time you smell them. Don't give up, the offending businesses are trying to wear us out. The e-mail list is located at the bottom of the page and the link for online reporting is above.

This was reported as being the smell associated with Shelley's Septic Tanks

Letters and Correspondence

Dear Special Magistrate,

As I was returning home from Melbourne on the beautiful evening of May 28th, I made the terrible mistake of opening my car window. I was driving north on Hwy 441 between Sadler Road and Lake Ola Drive when I smelled raw sewage as soon as I cracked the window. I am a resident of the Tangerine community, and I have many neighbors that live on Lake Ola Drive. I can’t imagine living in a place where a company would care so little for the residents of one of the best communities I have ever lived in. It’s as if Shelley’s has started to dump their untreated, raw sewage right in the middle of the street. They may be 3 miles away, but their smell is in our front yards, back yards, streets, community park, and even downtown Mount Dora.  Sometimes I smell it at my house which is about 1 mile from Hwy 441 and Lake Ola Drive. This is immensely egregious.

Does Shelley’s have more sway over our local governments than they should? Orange County does not seem to want to help us anymore.  How is using land to illegally dump raw sewage good for the environment, wildlife, and our communities?  What biohazard particulates am I inhaling?  I am sure it is damaging my lungs and those of my neighbors. When I smell it, it makes me nauseous and I start to cough.

Please rule in favor of all residents in Northwest Orange County:  Tangerine, Zellwood, Holly Estates, and Willow Street.  We would love to be able to breathe fresh air again. We are a diverse community of diverse backgrounds, socioeconomic status, and cultures.  Please do not allow Shelley’s to ruin our community.

Please place this letter in the public record of the hearing.

Thank you for your consideration.

Hi!

I live in Tangerine with my family, which includes my wife, our 3-year-old boy, a 1-year-old girl, so yes we are truly blessed!

Unfortunately, there have been countless times, particularly when the wind is coming from the south, where we’ve noticed a terrible smell in our backyard.  It’s so bad that my young kids will notice it.  As you can imagine, it must be pretty bad for a 3-year-old who loves to go swimming in the pool to ask to go inside!  Additionally, it seems that my 1-year-old in particular tends to cough and sneeze more often when this occurs.  I certainly hope it’s just a putrid smell and nothing that would cause my children any ongoing harm.

I definitely have noticed the frequency of this smell increase over the years, so we’re strongly hoping somebody can rectify this situation.  I hope the future of our community is more young families like mine, and not more terrible smells!

Thank you!

Of Note

https://www.followthemoney.org
Recently, we were asked if we are a political page. We are not but fixing the odor issue is political. We are a group of regular citizens who were forced to create what amounts to a "lobby" group. For this reason, it can be called political as a special interest that is not bound by party affiliation. Pressuring local government to clean, protect, and legislate clean air and water, is political.

Corporate contributions may be germane if they buy access and favorable non- regulation. Because our actions may result in fines, legislation, and regulation to make the company a better neighbor, we are political.

What we don't want the group to do is descend into the chaos of arguing off-topic, non-issue politics. This is because our goal is to have clean air and water and a healthy environment free of smells for our families.

Please note that a significant amount of money donated to campaigns is for ideological single interest issues. So we may point out political donations to the industries that we are monitoring because voters should be aware of them. In some cases, candidates may decide not to accept donations from industries that are harmful to our neighborhoods but that isn't our intent.

Remember candidates that accept money from our stinky industries may not be aware of our concerns. We only organized in February and the pandemic has stopped us from having public meetings. In case you're wondering, the candidate that Shelley's donated to is Keith Truenow, a sod farmer. He is a Trump Republican who had many donations from business interests. It's possible that the two have business interests in common so a donation may not mean support for the stink. But if you know Mr. Truenow, please bring up the issue to him. If he's elected, we need to have him on our side.

As always, our goal is to make Tangerine and the surrounding neighborhoods odor-free and free of harmful pollutants in our air and water.
