We Have Odor Reports Today

A Note From the Editor:

Tangerine, Zellwood, and the surrounding neighborhoods are fed up with the odors coming from #Anuvia and #ShelleysSeptic.

My e-mail to Orange County tonight:

To All Interested Parties,

The people of Tangerine, Zellwood, and Surrounding Neighborhoods are becoming increasingly frustrated by the obnoxious odors we’ve experienced.

We’re grateful for the online reporting tool from the FDEP but, when it comes to Orange County, we’ve been waiting patiently for a month and we still have no online reporting available. This is ironic because Orange County promised this to us first. For the last 2-3 weeks, we've been told that it was coming soon, and we haven't seen anything yet.

I am convinced that underreporting occurs for Orange County as not everyone will stop everything they are doing to write an e-mail. Some of those most affected are the least likely to have the time or the inclination to write e-mails. Many of the less affluent residents rely solely on their phones, and, as you know, it's much easier to write on a laptop or desktop.  As citizens, I think all of us deserve better regardless of the technology we have access to.

We all want to breathe fresh air and to enjoy the simple pleasure of going out in our yards without having to run inside due to the odors. We understand that plans to correct the problems are in the works but we want to enjoy working in our yards or walking our dogs while breathing fresh air.

I’ve posted some screenshots taken from our Facebook page to our blog to give you an idea of how the odors are disrupting our lives. I can't in good conscience repeatedly ask people to write e-mails to Orange County when they are able to easily report odor events to the FDEP.

Please give us an update on online reporting.

Best regards,

Kitty Breed

Online Odor Reporting for Orange County (under construction)

We are now able to report odors to the FDEP online. We still need to send an e-mail or call Orange County to report to them. Orange County is working on having an online system to report and it was supposed to be up this week. Orange County, we are getting impatient!

Zero Days Without an Odor Report

  • 4/29 8:33 am-  Fertilizer/Chemical/Sewage odors in Tangerine near Dudley/Dora.

Subject: Subject air not safe to breathe right now

I walked out my door and it was like someone put a bottle of ammonia under my nose!  I only walked across the street to get my mail and came back in.  In the short amount of time I was outside I now have a terrible headache and my throat is on fire!  IT IS UNACCEPTABLE for us to be told to stay inside when this happens!  It id YOUR responsibility to take care of this and you are failing to accomplish that!

We need this to stop now!

  • I am starting to agree. Any suggestions?
  •  I agree totally.
  • The problem is, it is not affecting enough people in their eyes. A handful of people are complaining compared to the large number of people located within 10 miles of the facilities. We will still be talking about this 15 years from now, just like it was being talked about when we built out here in 04. It falls on deaf ears.
  • How about we contact Scott Randolph the tax collector and tell him that next tax season we are going to make all of our property tax payments into a private escrow account that they can claim after the stench is resolved? We as property owners would be able to show that we paid our taxes timely, but that they can’t access them until they get the attention of someone who can fix the problem. It’s a roundabout method, but maybe it will get the state and county’s attention?
  • We need to be able to go out and walk the neighborhoods with fliers to widen our support. I personally am not comfortable going out with this virus going on, especially as I believe we will have a second wave. I am open to doing something such as a protest if we can socially distance. I'm open to hearing everyone's ideas.
  • It stinks so bad tonight I’m going to puke. Why can’t we bottle this smell? People act like we’re overreacting but if this was happening in celebration it would be stopped immediately!
  • I say we lawyer up and class action against the facility and the county and the state.
  • Tried to have a fish fry tonight-it stink so bad. Haven’t smelled it in a couple days and almost forgot how gross it smells. So bad my kids would not come outside. Anuvia! I hate you! You’re ruining my life!
  • It's sucking the joy out of everyday life, for sure.
  • We just had to come inside because of the smell. I reported it online.
  • I am so tired of this.
  • Me too.
